Pantr is an app for managing shopping lists, recipes and your pantry. The app does not collect personal data for advertising or analytics purposes and does not share any data with advertisers. There is no Pantr account and no provider-operated server: your content lives on your device and — if you are signed in to iCloud — in your own iCloud account. The following explains what data is processed when you use the app and how it is handled.
All content you enter — recipes, ingredients, shopping lists, pantry items (including quantities, package sizes and expiry dates) and settings — is stored locally on your device. If you are signed in to an Apple ID on your device, the app automatically synchronises this data with your iCloud account — no configuration required (see 3.2). Without an iCloud account, all data remains exclusively on your device.
If you are signed in to an Apple ID on your device, recipes, shopping lists and pantry items are synchronised across your Apple devices — including a paired Apple Watch — via CloudKit (Apple Inc.) and — if you use the sharing feature — shared with people you choose. Data is stored in your personal iCloud container and is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. Pantr has no access to this data outside of your device.
You can keep several households side by side and share each of them separately. Within a shared household, other participants can see who added an item or a recipe: for this, Pantr stores the first and last name that Apple provides for your iCloud account through the sharing feature. That name is only ever displayed inside the shared household it belongs to.
Synchronisation via iCloud happens automatically when you are signed in to an Apple ID on your device. It can be disabled in iOS system settings under iCloud. Without an iCloud account, the app works entirely locally.
The AI-powered features (recipe import from URLs or photos, generating a recipe from a name or from your pantry, nutrition analysis recommendations) are optional. You choose the provider in the app's settings; the default is “Disabled”, in which case no AI features are shown and no data is transmitted for AI purposes at all.
The app accesses your camera or photo library when you import a recipe from a photo or scan a product barcode. This is done solely to extract recipe information or to read the barcode. The barcode camera feed is evaluated on the device and is not stored. Recipe photos are not stored permanently and are not shared with third parties — except with the AI provider you selected, if you use the photo import feature (see 3.3).
When you scan a barcode while adding an item, the app looks the product name up via the public API of Open Food Facts. Only the scanned barcode number is transmitted — no account, no identifier and no other content from the app. As with any internet request, your device's IP address is technically visible to the operator. Every item can still be entered by hand; without a scan, no lookup takes place.
In cooking mode you can enable voice control to move between steps hands-free. Only then does the app access the microphone. Recognition runs entirely on your device — the app explicitly requests on-device recognition and will not start voice control if your device does not support it. Neither audio recordings nor transcripts are stored or transmitted to Apple, to the provider or to any third party.
Nutrition values come from an extract of the USDA FoodData Central database bundled with the app. The analysis runs entirely on your device; no server is queried for it. Only if you have enabled AI features are ingredient names sent to the AI provider you selected, for translating those names and for the recommendations (see 3.3).
When you use the sharing feature, push notifications may be sent via Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) to notify shared participants about changes to the shopping list. No personal content is transmitted via APNs; Apple only receives a technical device signal.
If you set an expiry date for a pantry item, the app additionally schedules a local reminder on that device. It is triggered by the device itself; no data is transmitted for it.
Some settings belong to the household rather than to the device: the default number of people, the order of shopping categories and the learned category assignment of individual items, the household's name and the pantry-integration switch are synchronised via iCloud together with that household's other content (see 3.2). In a shared household they therefore apply to everyone taking part.
Which household is currently active is additionally stored in your private iCloud area, so that your own devices — an Apple Watch, for example — follow the same household. That information is not shared with other people.
Settings that only affect this one device stay purely local to it (UserDefaults): your choice of AI provider, whether completed items are hidden, the selected pantry filter, the cooking-mode voice control settings and whether the introduction has been shown. This data does not leave your device.
The processing of the data described above is based on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of a contract / provision of app functionality) and Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent), where you activate optional features such as the AI-powered features.

Data on your device is retained for as long as the app is installed. You can delete all data at any time within the app or by uninstalling it. iCloud data can additionally be deleted via your device's iCloud settings.
